Carl's Story Carl had a tough start in life. At age 10, he was caring for his two younger brothers. He lacked confidence and had low self-esteem. Carl was awarded a mentor (Ben) who is now our Head of Pause & Engage to help with his individual development. Ben’s been with him ever since and supported Carl in taking up rugby. This was to have a massive impact on Carl’s life. The rugby club welcomed the entire family with open arms and introduced Carl to a range of positive experiences. Carl went on to represent Bristol Schools. Carl’s mentor, who now heads up mentoring at 2nd Chance, encouraged Carl, then 16, to join the Coachmakers programme in September 2013. Carl quickly became a leader on the programme, making a lengthy journey across town every day to coach and help other young people. Through Coachmakers, Carl did work experience with Bristol Rugby Community Foundation. His impact on the young people he worked with was instant, and he soon started a Level 3 Apprenticeship at Bristol Rugby the following year, while continuing his education and training with Coachmakers. Carl finished his apprenticeship, took six weeks out to coach multi-sports in South African townships and recently returned to full-time work with the Bristol Rugby Community Foundation.
